More and More Designer Offices Are Becoming “Overgrown” in Moss. Why?

Article May 7, 2019  |  Text by Lucie Dlouhá Text by Lucie Dlouhá

You’ve already got potted plants at your office, and green vertical walls and trees on your rooftop terrace. So what next? Now you need to install moss at your workplace. As much as you can! Taking its green tufts as a brush, you can compose a variety of pictures, decorations, and wall logos.

Commercial-space-enhancement experts Ambius find moss to be one of today’s top design trends – and one that will be growing through more and more office interiors. And they’re not alone.

Why?

Biophilia. It’s said people have a genetically encoded need to be in touch with nature. Seeing greenery calms us down. It makes employees calmer and more productive.

“We spend more and more time at work, and so we wanted to avoid the situation where our team’s workplace would start to feel too everyday. Our moss roof has become a vital part of our office. Moss is an original way to bring a little green into an office where traditional flowers wouldn’t really fit,” says SocialSharks director Nikol Stolle. Besides a large shark fin logo made of moss, these social network marketing experts also have moss in small aquariums on the kitchen walls (see photo below).

At What Price?

Suppliers can grant just about any wish. You’re only limited by your imagination, your space… and your budget. After all, every moss wall is an original artwork. What will you pay for yours? Just to give you an idea: at mechdekor.cz, a 50 × 50 cm moss panel will run you roughly 3,000 crowns. In the Czech environment, moss pictures can easily run up to the dozens of thousands of crowns; it depends on the size, the framing material, and any other decorative elements involved.

Worry-free

Moss walls are a green alternative to vertical gardens. Unlike those, a moss “carpet” is practically zero-maintenance, because these installations use chemically stabilized plants that are – put simply – hibernating. So you won’t have to worry about mold, nor about insects joining your “team.”

Vojtěch Pištěcký from Nature Designs confirms just how undemanding it is: “Our moss needs no watering, fertilizer, or other maintenance. You just have to occasionally blow off dust with a vacuum cleaner running in reverse. For everything else, there’s us. In practice, that means five-year maintenance for each moss wall.”

Even the whole Earth could be made out of moss. Take a look inside the travel agency meeting room decorated by Mechdekor.cz.

Fade-free

You don’t have to worry that the fresh green of your moss will wilt away on the first summer day. “We’ve established the life expectancy for our moss and other materials, and thus also their colors, as 10 years.

If a problem does come up, we handle it immediately with a service call,” Pištecký says, anticipating typical customer fears. You just have to make sure your moss walls aren’t under direct sunlight.

Not All Moss Is the Same

For interiors, the moss used is moss that grew outdoors but has then been chemically “mummified,” putting it in a state that’s similar to hibernation. According to the team at Flower Company, this conservation utilises biodegradable materials that meet workplace public-health standards. They meanwhile warn against the use of walls based on “Iceland” or “Norway” mosses (which are both actually lichens). “Two negative material properties are fundamental here when it comes to their use indoors: At low humidities, lichen becomes hard and quite fragile and crumbles at the first touch. Dust settles in lichen’s porous structure, and it is technically impossible to remove it in any way,” Flower Company warns.

The ideal conditions for moss wall placement:

• avoid physical contact

• do not expose to direct sunlight

• constant room temperature needed

• humidity of 40% to 70% needed

• do not expose to direct artificial light

• do not wet or place in direct contact with water

Moss care:

• Clean off dust periodically with an air spray or a fan (cold air, low fan speed). Cleaning frequency depends on the site’s dustiness.

"Moss won't ensure internal certainty and peace, nor workplace harmony. But after you’ve sent off a report to the company director, a moss wall will at least project a forest feeling onto you as you head over for a new dose of espresso. The calm feeling we all know from a clearing at a meadow’s edge. From a place with no reports or directors. From a place where it doesn’t matter if you’ve got LTE."
